Zee Music Company
Zee Music Company (ZMC) is one of Mumbai-based India's foremost publishing labels. It is a subsidiary of Zee Entertainment Enterprises. It carries out its business activities mainly from New Delhi. Year on year, Zee Music invests in and acquires more than 50% of new Bollywood music. The company was founded on 31 March 2014. Anurag Bedi is the chief business officer, the marketing head is Kirthi Rai, the digital head is Vinay Guwalani, and the licensing head is Pradeep Tripathi.
This leadership position, in such a short period, is attributable to the choice of titles, brand strength and its ability to market the music. The label has garnered significant market share in digital music consumption on the back of a rapidly increasing music catalogue and audience reach.
The parent company of Zee Music Company is Zee Entertainment Enterprises. Gadar: Ek Prem Katha was the first film. Later, Zee Records Home Video was established. In 2014, during the launch of the company, Punit Goenka, the CEO and managing director of Zee Entertainment Enterprises said- "the music industry is a large playing field and there is scope to explore the opportunity in this market. Technology has also emerged as a key transformer of the music industry and digital revenues are driving growth in the market. Since we are a content company, it is essential to own intellectual property as content is the king."
The company has faced tough competition from T-Series. The journey started with Hawaa Hawaai and has since branched out into multiple reprise and acoustic cover renditions of its own tracks. Among its most lucrative music licensing agreements are those with Fox Star Studios, UTV Software Communications, Balaji Motion Pictures, Excel Entertainment, Viacom 18 Motion Pictures, and Bhansali Productions.
Zee Music Company terminated its licensing contract with music streaming service Gaana in 2022. As a result, it's affected albums unavailable for streaming. After negotiations for renewal of their licensing agreements failed, all the albums distributed by the company were removed from Spotify in March 2023.
