As the first woman Chief Minister of West Bengal and the founder of the All India Trinamool Congress Mamata has changed the political game of West Bengal and is still one powerful woman. From modest origins to political prominence. Mamata was born on January 5, 1955 in Kolkata (Calcutta at the time of birth). The girl that began her political career and did not stop studying after her father failed to return was Mamata Banerjee of Kolkata. During the 1970s, she began her career as a student leader and gained recognition for being outspoken. The Rise of Bengal’s ‘Didi’. Mamata joined the Indian National Congress in the 1980s. She made history by winning over Somnath Chatterjee, the Communist Party leader, at the Lok Sabha elections in 1984. Over the years, she earned the reputation of a leader who refuses to back down from a fight. Yet, she disagreed with Congress leadership and thus formed the Trinamool Congress in 1998. The Woman Who Took on the Left. For over thirty years, the CPI(M) dominated the politics of West Bengal. Many believed they were unbeatable—until Mamata came along. She became the voice of the people with her massive protests against land acquisition in Singur and Nandigram. In 2011, her grassroots link and campaigns culminated in ending the Left Front’s 34-year rule and the becoming the first woman Chief Minister of West Bengal. Transforming West Bengal. Mamata has worked on development, welfare schemes and infrastructures since coming into office. Some of her major initiatives include. A scheme to empower young girls through education. She has written a few books and sometimes writes poetry to share her thoughts. She is known for leading a simple life and wears a cotton saree and slippers instead of brands. She is the first woman in Indian History to be made the Railway Minister in India and served twice. Unlike many politicians, she does not lead a VIP life walking among people without security.
